Major social media platforms including Meta Platforms, Snap Inc. and TikTok have agreed to pay about $27 million to settle a lawsuit brought by a rural Kentucky school district over alleged harms to teen mental health.
The lawsuit alleged that addictive products contributed to a teen mental health crisis and strained school resources. Under the settlement described in the research summary, Meta will pay $9 million, while Snap and TikTok will each pay $8 million. Google’s YouTube settled for more than $2 million and will also provide training programs.
The agreement highlights the growing legal and financial pressure facing technology companies over the impact of social media products on young users. School districts and other public institutions have increasingly argued that youth mental health problems linked to social platforms impose real costs on education systems and local communities.
