US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated significant progress in peace talks with Iran, suggesting a deal could be announced "in the next few hours" regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump also stated that a peace deal with Iran was "largely negotiated" and would be announced shortly, focusing on ending the conflict and ensuring free passage through the vital waterway.
Senior US officials signaled on May 24, 2026, that a diplomatic breakthrough with Iran may be imminent, with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz a central element of any agreement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said negotiators had made “initial progress” and suggested a deal could be announced “in the next few hours.” President Trump said a peace deal with Iran was “largely negotiated” and would be announced shortly, framing the talks as aimed at ending the conflict and ensuring free passage through the vital waterway, according to reporting by The Guardian, Bloomberg and the Associated Press.
The potential deal comes as Washington has maintained pressure on Iran by enforcing a maritime blockade; The Guardian’s live coverage reported that the blockade would remain in “full force” until an agreement is reached. Any accord that restores secure, free movement through the Strait of Hormuz — a key conduit for global energy shipments — would be a consequential shift for regional security and global commerce.
Even as negotiations appeared to advance, other crises underscored the fragility of the wider security environment. A former prosecutor for the International Criminal Court urged the European Union to enact a statute to block US sanctions that have been imposed on ICC officials. Those sanctions followed the court’s issuance of arrest warrants for members of the Israeli cabinet, and the call for EU action was reported by The Guardian.
Meanwhile, violence continued elsewhere in the international system. Russia launched a mass air attack on Kyiv that reports said included hypersonic Oreshnik missiles; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of the new weaponry, and the US Embassy in Kyiv issued a security alert advising US citizens to be prepared for a potentially significant air attack, according to reporting by The Guardian, the Associated Press and the embassy’s own alert.
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon also escalated. The Israeli military issued evacuation orders for residents of multiple towns and villages in southern Lebanon amid rising hostilities; the move followed an Israeli strike that reportedly destroyed a Lebanese civil defence building, The Guardian reported.

Yet the simultaneous surge in military action and legal-political disputes across Europe and the Middle East highlighted how any single agreement would sit amid a broader, unsettled landscape of conflict and contestation.
As negotiators moved toward what US officials described as a possible announcement, the outcome’s durability will be tested not only by the terms agreed in the coming hours but by concurrent developments on multiple fronts — from international law disputes over accountability to new forms of battlefield escalation in Ukraine and Lebanon.
