The South African government and Afrikaner advocacy groups have rejected the Trump administration’s assertion that white people in South Africa face a humanitarian emergency.
The rejection followed a U.S. announcement that it would admit an additional 10,000 white South Africans as refugees this year, citing the alleged emergency. South African officials and Afrikaner groups disputed that characterization.
The disagreement has opened a new political dispute between Washington and Pretoria over how conditions in South Africa are being portrayed and whether they justify expanded refugee admissions for white South Africans.
