Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that Beijing expects an agreement to end the US-Israeli war against Iran to be submitted to the UN Security Council for endorsement, giving it “legitimacy and authority.”
China is chairing the Security Council for May and has emphasised the body’s responsibility for international peace and security.
Wang’s remarks followed cautious optimism from US officials about progress toward finalising the pact. China urged all parties to remain committed to achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace in the region.
The diplomacy comes after escalating tensions since US and Israeli strikes against Iran in February. Beijing’s position places the Security Council at the centre of any effort to formalise and legitimise a peace arrangement.
