The UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously condemned a drone strike on the United Arab Emirates’ Barakah nuclear power plant, describing the attack as a “flagrant violation of international law with grave risks for civilian lives, infrastructure and the environment.”
The attack took place last week and struck an electricity generator outside the plant’s inner perimeter, causing a fire that was later brought under control, according to the reported accounts cited in the research.
In its statement, the council demanded an immediate and permanent end to all attacks against civilian infrastructure in the UAE, including peaceful nuclear facilities. The council also underscored the implications of such attacks for regional stability and nuclear safety.
The unanimous condemnation placed the strike within a broader framework of international law and civilian protection, with Security Council members warning of the risks posed when nuclear-related sites are targeted, even when damage is reported outside a plant’s inner perimeter.
