Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. held a summit meeting in Japan on May 28, 2026, and issued a joint statement formalizing relations between their countries as “Comprehensive Strategic Partners.”
The leaders expressed deep concern over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and malicious cyber activities. They reaffirmed their commitment to denuclearization and to resolving the abductions issue.
The summit also focused on economic cooperation. Japan and the Philippines agreed to deepen ties and advance deliberations toward upgrading existing economic partnership agreements, including JPEPA and AJCEP, with the goal of strengthening economic resilience and supply chains across Asia.
Japan also voiced support for the Philippines’ bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The meeting underscored a broader effort by Tokyo and Manila to strengthen political, security and economic coordination amid regional concerns.
