China, serving as the rotating president of the UN Security Council for May, convened a high-level meeting today on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System.”
Foreign Minister Wang Yi presented what were described as “five reinvigorations” aimed at strengthening the UN’s role, authority and effectiveness in global governance.
The initiative reflects China’s continuing effort to promote multilateralism and advance its vision of an international order centered on the United Nations. The meeting also gave Beijing a prominent platform during its Security Council presidency to frame debate around the UN Charter and global governance reform.
